His life reminds me of "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief," something I've prayed a lot.

Thanks for this post, Rebecca. So thankful for his hymns!Juliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02074899759098081237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1873453867984233607.post-40685767826071411942012-10-19T07:59:37.256-04:002012-10-19T07:59:37.256-04:00I was recently privileged to be able to visit Olne...I was recently privileged to be able to visit Olney with Teresa, a dear friend of mine from America who was staying with me at the time. We visited the Cowper/Newton museum, and I now happily possess my own copy of the Olney Hymnal. I too have a soft spot in my heart for Cowper....I had a period in my own life where I experienced that same sense of despair, after becoming a Christian, where I believed I was beyond God's help...it was quite the worst experience of my life.

Since then, I am thankful that God has opened my heart to receive more of His grace, and more revelation of what it means that I am His adopted child. But I don't think we should be surprised that some struggle so badly with finding peace in Christ from their conversion....this is why the book of 1 John is in our Bibles, after all! "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life." (1 John 5:13). The devil will do all he can to take away that knowledge from us. But praise be to God, whether we do know that blessed peace in our salvation or not, none of that changes the truth of the fact that in the fountain filled with blood drawn from Immanuel's veins "sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains". Praise His Name! And in His mercy, may He help all those who struggle to have an assurance of their salvation.Diana Lovegrovehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14849754637056012241noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1873453867984233607.post-22992019872619502962012-10-19T06:06:06.571-04:002012-10-19T06:06:06.571-04:00There was a section of the biography of John Newto...There was a section of the biography of John Newton that talks about his dealings with Cowper. I think today, Cowper could have been helped with medication. It almost sounds as if he was manic depressive. He wrote such beautiful words; it is such a sadness, but we are the beneficiaries of his abilities.Kim Shayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11636800185288441620noreply@blogger.com
